Welcome to LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: A Cancer Survivor Exercise Program. We are happy you are considering joining our program and look forward to getting to know you. This program consists of up to twelve class participants meeting twice weekly with two certified instructors to learn and perform exercises designed to improve cardiovascular endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. The program meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, the daytime group from around 12-1:30pm and the evening group (if there are enough participants registered to support an evening class) from around 5:30-7 pm. Regular attendance and participation creates the group experience and supportive environment, so while perfect attendance is not required, we do ask that you are able to commit to attending the majority of sessions. 

 

Our instructors are trained to meet you where you are at in your fitness journey and help you progress safely and consistently. We begin the program by learning the strength and cardio equipment in the Wellness Center, and progress to group exercise class demos, studio equipment, and free weight exercises. The class is designed to have a flexible program that can change to meet the needs and preferences of the class participants. 

 

As a Livestrong Participant, you will receive a free family membership to the Valparaiso Family YMCA for the 12 weeks of your program and, thanks to generous donors, an additional 9 months after your program’s end so you can continue to practice the good habits you learned in class. The StayStrong program is a continuation of the Livestrong Program and consists of an optional once weekly meeting to bridge the gap between twice weekly classes and working out completely independently. 

 

To register for the Livestrong program, you will need to complete a registration packet, which includes a medical release form from your doctor. Once your paperwork is turned into the Valparaiso Family YMCA and before class starts, you will meet with one of your instructors for an intake appointment, which includes an upper body and lower body strength assessment.
